On Friday, May 31st, the Michael Bourne Memorial Event/Junior Summer Kick Off was held at the Woodlake tennis courts to honor the memory of Michael Bourne. It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon at the tennis courts. We had close to 100 people in attendance to include our Junior players ranging in age from preschool through high school along with many adults. The youth all enjoyed participating in fun on court activities and games, then enjoyed pizza and a soda.
The highlight of the afternoon’s activities was the presentation of the Michael Bourne Memorial Scholarship to a very deserving Woodlake member and high school senior, Emily Thexton. Congratulations to Emily who will attend school at Virginia Tech in the fall. The other finalists were Edson DeGuzman, Mac Teefey and Devin Hux. Edson and Mac will attend the University of Virginia and Devin will be attending Virginia Tech in the fall.
For those of you who did not know Michael Bourne, he was an exceptional young man with an incredible smile. Michael was active in all aspects of the Woodlake Swim and Racquet Club. When he wasn’t playing for the Clover Hill High School tennis team, Michael spent time stringing racquets and helping the pros teach clinics for the younger players. Whether playing competitively or just for fun, he always had a great attitude and a smile on his face. Michael was diagnosed with leukemia in 2006 and he passed away in December 2007 after a twenty month long battle. The Michael Bourne Memorial Fund was created in his honor and every year, a scholarship is awarded to a deserving Woodlake Junior player who represents and exhibits Michael’s character, spirit and love of the game of tennis.
