Ask Melany Krausse, Janis Krausse and Erin Edge what they did this summer and you won't get the typical kids' answer. These girls are already learning the value of contributing to their community and finding out about the rewards of volunteerism first-hand.

Melany (12), Janis (10) and Erin (11) went far beyond the traditional babysitting jobs over the summer. Together, they planned, organized and executed "Children's World," a backyard summer camp that brought neighborhood kids together for crafts, games, and lots of fun.

The team of "teachers" even compiled a book that was created by the participants to document daily themes such as Water Day, Nature Day, Game Day, Sports Day, and Music Day. This keepsake book includes pictures, drawings made by the kids, and a dedication to the parents of those who attended. wpeD.jpg (9936 bytes)

The end of summer didn't mark the end of the girls' contributions. On Columbus Day, the girls used their day off from school to sell hot cocoa at the entrance to Grove Forest. They plan to use the money they earned to spruce up their neighborhood's entrance with pumpkins and other fall decorations. Says Melany, "We just wanted to do something for our neighborhood and our friends. We didn't do this to make money for ourselves."

With Christmas approaching, the girls are already making plans for their annual neighborhood caroling. They'll gather together afterward for a little cocoa and holiday companionship.

Melany says she isn't sure what's next, but they're already collecting ideas for the next Children's World. They'll have them lining up to enroll!
